The nine stories in this collection swirl with beauty and insight Lin really captures the minds of his characters and takes the reader on a journey that straddles the lines between hopefulness despair and reality unreality In my two favorites, Tableau and China Girl, he takes us on exactly opposite journeys Tableau sets up a bizarre pseudo reality that almost feels as if he s describing the daily life of a painting Whereas, China Girl is hyper real, digging into the grit and heart of a young woman trying desperately to get away from her life and country and emigrate to the U.S to attend college In the former, the success achieved is a sort of failure filled with unresolved yearning In the latter, failure brings about a sort of freedom in itself. These stories are complex, but rather powerful The writing moves at a perfect pace I didn t want to put the book down, except to smoke and contemplate
Nice book of short stories Really liked the story where she is sitting in the immigration office, I really believed her emotions. Reviewed by Skyler Boudreau for Reader Views 11 17 China Girl And Other Stories by Ho Lin is a collection of nine short stories that range from contemporary vignettes to urban fables The reader explores stories that range from the title piece that details a young woman s haunting experiences while roaming Beijing, to a film treatment about four people interconnected by a fifth Each story embraces its climate, whether it be Los Angeles, Hong Kong, or Beijing, embowing its tale with an immersive atmosphere that sucks the reader in Ho Lin is a master of painting miniature worlds. The entire collection is a map of tiny collisions, spanning from Eastern versus Western culture to history versus myth While each piece is unique, Lin s impressive storytelling weaves them together to build a unique tapestry His prose is simple, reading almost like a documentation written by an outside observer, and the style lends itself well to each story China Girl is the first piece to be encountered It draws the reader in with its casual descriptions of tragedy and a strange protagonist It is the perfect opening to the anthology and lets the reader know exactly what to expect a dream like journey through culture.I had some reservations entering this anthology I find it difficult to engage with short stories sometimes Some are too short to leave me feeling satisfied, while others drone on without saying much of anything China Girl And Other Stories is the first to hold my compl
She hates the David Bowie songHow could anyone think of that as a beautiful Chinese girl So thinks May Lee, the exotic dancer whose story is told in the eponymous opening story of the collection China Girl, whose characters move, often ambiguously, between East and West, belonging to neither and both San Francisco, Hong Kong, and Beijing all appear as part of the same cultural and geographical continuum, as well as little seaside towns in which human and political tragedies play out.The stories of China Girl are delicately yet vigorously crafted each one shows meticulous construction, with subtle details and close attention given to the characters internal states, but with the inclusion of plenty of earthy action as well people eat, meet, break up, fight, die, and make love or fail to make love in vignettes that suggest something beyond the beginning, middle, and end of the story in question. And in fact, while I would hesi
These short stories had a massive range of ideas, from the everyday of having to deal with a love triangle to the extreme like a government employee keeping watch over a journalist who stepped over the line The language was simply beautiful, meaning there were several quotes that I wished I had written down because they hit me hard, and all the stories took on a slightly otherworldly air This worked well in places, like the stories with ghosts in them or the story about the researcher, but in other places, it left me feeling slightly distant to the story and to the characters.I enjoyed the stories about mistaken identity, the love triangle as well as the author s insistence on knowing the truth had led her to become distant from her family However, this is definitely a book I would get a physical copy for because the ebook was strangely formatted in places, likely not helped because it was an ARC, which m
Ho Lin s short story anthology was an interesting read Each tale aimed to shed light on random moments from varying points of view He pulls in the reader with unexpected juxtapositions of settings and tone The collection exudes emotion as if the stories were collective memories meshed together He rarely delves deep into any specific narratives The stories bounced between Asia
A collection of short stories that s worth reading I particularly took to three stories Ghost Wife, Litany Eulogy, and National Holiday. There s a phrase that haunted me to certainty When nothing is left of my body but ashes, even then, my love and hate will always burn I m grateful to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review and I
Perhaps not as engaging as I had hope but I think this is on me There s a tone to each of these long ish short stories distancing themselves from my intellect leaving me cold to much of their content However, that is not t
