True Believers Burlington VT Private Investigator Hack Loomis Meets Up With A UFO Group Run By A Charismatic Psychiatrist Who Treats People Who Believe They Ve Been Abducted By Aliens And His Partner, A Disarmingly Beautiful Woman Who Claims To Be In Contact With An Alien Mother Ship As Loomis S Investigation Takes Him And Connie To The Edge Of The Lunatic Fringe And Beyond, They Find Themselves In Danger From People Far Frightening Than True Believers. Hack Loomis, a Canadian born detective living and working in Vermont, seems like kind of a typical PI middle aged, a little rough around the edges, a man who has probably never complete fit into regular society When the book begins, Hack is fielding yet another phone call from his mother, asking him to come home to Toronto and take his rightful place in working at the family craft beer brewery While anything involving craft beer sounds appealing to me, Hack prefers to stay away and carve out his own life and identity In addition to trying to make a go of his detective business, he has recently started a relationship with his assistant, Connie Noble, and he s anxious to continue this affair. In the course of trying to find a missing woman, Hack and Connie become involved with a group of people who believe in space aliens, UFOs, and who are attempting to leave Earth before imminent ecological disaster hits For me, the exploration of the people who have joined this group formed the most interesting part of the book T

I really enjoyed, this book The writing was very good and the story was interesting I also liked the levity that was often introduced Liked the story of how the main character got his nickname as well. In Michael Blair s True Believers , we meet private eye Hack Loomis, a transplanted Canadian now living in Burlington, Vermont His assistant of two years and now new lover Connie Noble is concerned about her friend Belle Ryerson, who was supposed to meet her one afternoon, never showed up and hasn t been seen since Loomis investigations lead him to a strange group that believes in UFOs , they think that one of them is in contact with aliens who are helping the group raise money to build a transmitter, which the aliens will then use to guide a spaceship that will in turn take the group off Planet Earth, which is about to self destruct How could Belle, who Loomis hears is a very practical person, come to be involved with this group, and importantly, where is she now Loomis has less time than he thinks to find the answers I found this book in a free library box in the neighbourhood and chose to read it because Michael Blair is a Montrealer, and I like to support local
Great I have read all of Michael Blairs Thom McCall and Joe Shoe series and he told me, when I asked him if there were any , that he was working on a standalone so any of McCall or Shoe would be a long time coming Well True Believers , the standalone, was a long time coming, too, but it was sure worth the long impatient wait I really liked this story a lot While the basic investigative work was fairly formulaic there were a few things such as the Alien refugee flight and the close cooperation of the Police with Hack Loomis, something which happens very rarely in crime novels, the most notable example in my reading being Rayven T Hill s Jake and Annie Lincoln series, preventing this from being just another run of the day mystery When you add a cast of very well drawn and eccentric characters, some with unexpected back stories, lots of action, a few not quite expected twists, money as the perf

A decent mystery at least, in terms of the alien cult and its followers That said, I didn t like how any of the female characters were portrayed or treated Loomis partner, Connie, whines that she would rather be a teacher than a private investigator, then she falls asleep in her car in the woods because she knew Loomis would show up sooner or later to rescue her , and at one point she even tells Loomis in all seriousness that he is the brains of this outfit Also,
I was intrigued by the synopsis Missing person, dead body, UFO cult What s not to like So I started reading And I kept reading, wondering when it would pick up And then it was over.
